Linking Ubiquitin Research to Drug Discovery

Senior Scientist, Mass-Spectrometry, Ubiquigent Ltd, Dundee (June 2018)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated individual to join the biology team to help support Ubiquigent as it moves into the next phase of its development.

The overall strategy of the company is to become ‘the’ strategic partner for companies wishing to exploit the ubiquitin system for therapeutic benefit.  The current business is based around a discovery platform focused on the ubiquitin system and accessible on either a CRO or a collaborative basis in support of clients’ drug discovery programmes.  In parallel the platform is being increasingly used to support the in-house development of focussed compound libraries designed to target specific ubiquitin system drug targets with the objective of delivering validated hits/leads for subsequent commercialisation/out-licensing, an approach that will become the key focus of the company as it develops.

Ubiquigent is now looking to expand its biology team with a Senior Scientist who will lead and take responsibility for the deployment and application of mass-spectrometry within the company, primarily to support target identification, validation and small molecule target engagement activities.  The role, reporting to the Head of Biology, will join a team that will share responsibility for the operational delivery of client, collaborator and internal projects.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for the deployment and application of mass-spectrometry within the company:
  • Development and operation of mass-spectrometry based biochemical and cell-based assays to support target identification, validation and small molecule target engagement activities.
  • Transfer of assays to automation platforms for large scale compound screening as required.
  • Analysis and interpretation of data and the generation of reports for internal use and for external clients.
  • Independently conceiving, planning, implementing and operating new services.
  • Maintaining the company’s ELN/LIMS systems.
  • Providing cross functional support across the company as the business requires.
  • Working very closely with the senior management and chemistry teams to support internal and client/collaborator programmes.

  • Hands-on experience in the application of mass-spectrometry for the purposes of protein identification, protein characterisation (e.g. PTMs), target engagement and global protein quantitation.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in biochemistry, enzymology, biophysics, chemical biology, structural biology or similar.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent experimental planning and execution, quality control, troubleshooting and organisational skills as well as the ability to work in a closely collaborative manner.
